Yeah, I'm one of those people. My pets are my kids. We have two dogs and two cats.
Our oldest pet is a 10 year old domestic housecat, Thanatos. A year after Than adopted us, she was joined by a beautiful black and white Manx, Grendel. A year after Grendel joined the family we added Beelzebub, a blue point siamese. In 1990, we rescued an abused German Shep cross (not even our vet has determined what the cross is) we named Fenris.
Grendel didn't really take to the addition of a dog in the family. She was quite miserable until she moved in with my parents. She loves being the only animal in a household and isn't the slightest bit interested in sharing her people with other furry siblings.
While Drew was away in the field, I stumbled upon another abused Shep cross and added Hypnos to the mix. He's younger than the others by 6 years and is definitely going through his terrible two's at the moment!
